Revving Up Freedom: The Hollister Independence Rally Returns
Celebrating the Birthplace of the American Outlaw Biker on July 4th

Long before Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper roared across the silver screen as Captain America and Billy in the iconic 1969 film Easy Rider, Marlon Brando’s leather-clad bike gang tore through a small California town in The Wild One. That 1953 movie drew inspiration from real events in Hollister, California, on July 4, 1947, when rival motorcycle clubs raced through the streets and clashed in local bars. That chaotic weekend sparked the legend of the American 1% outlaw biker—a gritty, rebellious spirit that still rumbles through our culture today
For decades, the Hollister Freedom Rally kept that legacy alive, drawing bikers and freedom-lovers to the birthplace of the outlaw biker. But in 2017, the city hit the brakes, denying permits over concerns about costs, security, and rumors of resurgent outlaw biker influence. The COVID years only deepened the rally’s hiatus. Yet, in a unanimous January 2025 vote, the Hollister City Council greenlit the return of the Hollister Independence Bike Rally for July 4-5, 2025.
Local voices roared in support of the revival. Residents, business owners, and rally advocates—including Mike Corbin, founder of Hollister-based Corbin Motorcycle Saddles—spoke passionately before the council, tipping the scales in favor of bringing the event back. Their message was clear: Hollister’s rebel heart still beats strong.
So, gear up for July 2025, when the Wild One rides again. As we celebrate 249 years since the Declaration of Independence, let’s keep the spirit free but the chaos in check—no street racing, and maybe just a few less bar brawls. Here’s to keeping Hollister’s legendary tradition rolling into 2026 and beyond.
