A Historic Split for Polaris and Indian Motorcycle
On October 13, 2025, Polaris Inc. dropped a bombshell in the powersports world, announcing the separation of Indian Motorcycle into a standalone company. The Minnesota-based giant, known for its off-road titans like the Ranger and RZR, will sell a majority stake in Indian to Carolwood LP, a Los Angeles-based private equity firm. Polaris retains a minority equity stake, with the deal set to close in Q1 2026, pending regulatory approvals. Indian, acquired by Polaris in 2011, generated $478 million in revenue (7% of Polaris’s total) for the 12 months ending June 30, 2025. The move is accretive to Polaris, boosting annualized adjusted EBITDA by $50 million and adjusted EPS by $1.00. Shares (NYSE: PII) surged ~9% in after-hours trading, reflecting investor confidence in the streamlined strategy.

Mike Kennedy Takes the Throttle
Leading the charge for the new Indian Motorcycle Company is CEO Mike Kennedy, handpicked by Carolwood LP. Kennedy’s no rookie—he’s a 30-year powersports veteran with a proven track record. His resume includes 26 years in leadership roles at Harley-Davidson, plus stints as CEO of RumbleOn (the largest U.S. powersports dealership group) and CEO/President of Vance & Hines (a high-performance exhaust and accessories maker). In a LinkedIn post announcing the spinoff, Kennedy shared, “What Polaris and the Indian Motorcycle team has achieved by reigniting it as a force to be reckoned with in the global motorcycle industry is nothing short of amazing. A strong brand. 600+ dealers across the globe. A competitive product line. Growing market share.” He’s “grateful and humbled” to lead Indian into its next chapter, urging the team to “tighten your chin strap and shift this ride into the next gear!”

Indian’s Battle-Ready Foundation
Indian Motorcycle isn’t starting from zero. Since its 2011 revival under Polaris, the brand has rebuilt its legacy with over 600 dealers worldwide, spanning North America, Europe, and Asia. Its lineup—featuring heavyweights like the Scout, Chief, and Springfield—blends classic American cruiser style with modern performance, steadily carving out market share against rivals like Harley-Davidson and Ducati. Kennedy noted the “competitive product portfolio and a global dealer network” as key strengths, with a “highly engaged staff that is passionate about the brand and its business.” About 900 employees will transition to the standalone company, including operations in Spirit Lake, IA; Monticello, MN; and a design center in Burgdorf, Switzerland.
Polaris Sharpens Its Focus
For Polaris, the spinoff unlocks sharper focus on its core off-road and powersports segments. CEO Mike Speetzen, who’s led since 2021, emphasized the strategic logic: “Indian Motorcycle has grown into a powerhouse brand under Polaris, and this separation will empower it to reach even greater heights as a standalone entity. Partnering with Carolwood LP ensures it has the right support to innovate and expand globally.” Mike Dougherty, Polaris’s President of On-Road and International, will retire post-close after 28 years, marking a leadership transition alongside the deal. The financial upside is clear: Polaris expects enhanced profitability and agility in its remaining portfolio.
Carolwood LP’s Big Bet
Carolwood LP, founded in 2014, sees Indian as a crown jewel with untapped potential. Principal Adam Rubin stated in the release, “We are thrilled to invest in Indian Motorcycle, a brand with immense potential and a passionate community. Our partnership will fuel its growth while honoring its heritage.” With fresh capital and Kennedy’s leadership, expect Indian to accelerate global expansion, innovate its lineup, and deepen rider engagement. Kennedy’s already stoked, saying he’s “beyond excited to build on Indian Motorcycle’s current momentum and throttle it into its next chapter.”

What’s Next for Indian Motorcycle?
This spinoff isn’t just a corporate shuffle—it’s a launchpad for Indian to reclaim its throne in the premium motorcycle market. With Kennedy’s proven expertise, Carolwood’s backing, and a battle-tested brand, Indian is poised to challenge the status quo. Will it outmuscle competitors or redefine American cruising? As Kennedy put it, the team is “immediately armed” for the fight.
Riders and investors alike are watching closely.
